The corner three has become one of the most sought-after shots in basketball. The reason is geometric rather than tactical, and everything else follows from that single fact.
The arc is not a true circle
A three-point line would be a clean semicircle if the court were wide enough. It is not, so the arc is cut off and runs straight along each sideline.
That straight segment sits closer to the basket than the curved portion. A shooter standing in the corner is therefore attempting a shorter shot worth exactly the same three points.
The difference is not enormous in absolute terms, but it is consistent, and it applies to every corner attempt taken in every game at every level.
Distance turns directly into accuracy
Shooting accuracy falls as distance grows, because a longer shot needs more force and force is harder to repeat precisely. Small errors in release are magnified over a longer flight.
Shaving even a modest amount off the distance therefore raises the expected return on the attempt. Coaches treat that gap as free efficiency rather than as a rounding error.
The corner also removes one variable: the shooter faces the rim square from a fixed spot, which makes footwork more repeatable than it is on the move.
Spacing pulls defenders away from the rim
A shooter parked in the corner has to be guarded, and guarding him means standing near the sideline rather than near the basket where help defence lives.
That stretches the defence horizontally and opens driving lanes for a ball handler. The corner shooter changes the geometry of the floor even on possessions where he never touches the ball.
Teams have consequently reorganised their offences so that two players occupy the corners for most of a possession, which was rare a couple of decades ago.
The pass matters as much as the shot
Most corner threes arrive from a drive that forces help, then a kick-out to the vacated shooter. The shot is manufactured by the penetration, not created in isolation.
Because the corner sits behind the defence's line of sight, a defender rotating out arrives late and cannot contest cleanly without fouling or conceding a drive.
That is why assist rates on corner threes run far higher than on other attempts. It is a shot produced by ball movement rather than by individual creation.
Taking it away costs a defence something
Defences can shut the corner down by refusing to help off it, but that leaves the driver unimpeded and concedes a shot at the rim instead.
Every defensive scheme picks which of those it can live with. The corner three's efficiency means the choice is genuinely uncomfortable rather than obvious.
What has changed is not the rule but the recognition of it, and defences are now built around a line that has always been shorter than it looks.
