Why Starting Blocks Now Carry Sensors

Starting blocks used to be a pair of adjustable footplates. At major meets they are now instrumented, measuring force against the plates and feeding that data to the starter.

What the sensors actually measure

Each footplate carries a transducer recording the force the athlete applies against it, sampled continuously from before the gun.

An athlete in the set position exerts a steady load. The start appears in the data as a sharp rise above that baseline.

The system times the interval between the gun signal and that rise, producing a reaction time for every lane in the race.

Why a threshold exists

Reaction times below a defined floor are treated as anticipation rather than response, on the basis that a human cannot process the signal that quickly.

That threshold turns a false start into a measurable event rather than a visual judgment by an official watching eight lanes simultaneously.

It also produces disputes, because the threshold is a rule about biology and athletes near it are penalized for a reading rather than for visibly moving.

The gun and the speakers

Sound travels slowly enough across a start line that athletes in outer lanes once heard the gun measurably later than those nearest it.

Modern starts use speakers behind each set of blocks fed from the starting device, so every athlete receives the signal simultaneously.

The gun itself often triggers electronically rather than acoustically, making it a switch that also happens to make a noise for the crowd.

Setup is athlete-specific hardware

Block spacing, plate angle and distance from the line are set by each athlete and recorded, then reproduced exactly at every competition.

Small changes alter the angle of the first push, which is why sprinters resist adjusting blocks and mark their settings carefully.

Rail-mounted blocks that lock into the track surface exist so those settings hold under load rather than shifting on the first stride.

What the data is used for afterward

Reaction times published with results describe the start alone and say nothing about the rest of the race, though they are frequently read as if they did.

Coaches use the force traces more usefully, examining how quickly force rises and how evenly it is distributed between the two legs.

That analysis is a training tool rather than a competition one, and it exists only because the equipment installed for officiating happens to record it.

A blocked shot is an admission, not an achievement

I have never understood the applause.

A forward drops to one knee, takes a puck off the ankle, gets up limping, and the building roars. Fine, it is brave, and bravery deserves noise. But look at the ten seconds before it. The defending team lost the puck, failed to get it out on the first attempt, failed on the second, and ended up so far inside its own zone that the only remaining option was to put a human body in front of the net. The block is the last line of a chain of failures. We are cheering the final failure because it happens to be visible and painful.

The statistic makes it worse. Blocked shots are recorded as a defensive positive, and a defenceman with high block totals is described as a warrior. Sort any league's block leaders and you will find something uncomfortable: a lot of them play on teams that spend most of the night in their own end. That is not a coincidence. It is the definition.

The counter-argument is fair, so let me put it properly. Given that the puck is already there, the block is the correct action, and a player who takes it is doing his job. Yes. The block is a good decision inside a bad situation. My complaint is that we evaluate players on the decision and not the situation, and the two get quietly merged when a contract is being negotiated.

There is a cost, too, that never appears next to the number. Blocked shots break hands and feet. Not occasionally. Routinely. A team whose system relies on volume shot blocking is spending its own bodies to compensate for an inability to exit the zone, and it will pay for that in February when three defencemen are in walking boots.

The teams I admire block fewer shots and it means nothing sinister. They block fewer because the puck is not in front of their net as often, because their breakout works, because they win the wall battle at the blue line and the puck goes the other way.

Judge a defence by how rarely it needs a hero. The block is what you do when the system has already stopped working.
