Soccer matches in the United States are frequently played in stadiums built for American football. The buildings can take the event, and the field almost never fits comfortably.
The width is the binding constraint
A gridiron field is narrow relative to a full-size soccer field, and stadium bowls are built tight to that narrower rectangle to keep sightlines close.
Length is usually recoverable because end zones and run-off give some room. Width is not, because the stands begin almost immediately outside the sideline.
The result is a soccer field at the narrow end of the permitted range, which compresses the game in ways players notice within minutes.
What gets removed to make room
Venues buy width by pulling out the first rows of seating, retracting movable lower bowl sections where they exist, or accepting minimal technical areas.
Every one of those choices costs inventory. Removing rows removes the most expensive seats in the building for that event.
Team benches, camera positions and the fourth official's area then have to fit into whatever margin is left, often in a compromised arrangement.
Surface conflicts
Many gridiron venues run synthetic turf, which some soccer competitions restrict, so a temporary natural field is trucked in and laid over the existing surface.
Overlay fields are sod grown elsewhere on a shallow profile and installed within a few days, then removed after the event.
They play acceptably when installed carefully and poorly when they are not, because seams, uneven root contact and shallow drainage all show up under a rolling ball.
Markings and the visual problem
Permanent gridiron markings, hash marks and logos remain visible under paint or overlay, which is a broadcast issue as much as a playing one.
Painting out lines is possible but slow, and it competes with a conversion schedule that may involve the venue's primary tenant days later.
Where an overlay field is used, the markings disappear entirely, which is one of the less discussed reasons overlays are chosen for major fixtures.
Why the arrangement persists
Capacity is the answer. Purpose-built soccer venues in American cities are typically much smaller, and large fixtures need the seats.
The infrastructure around big stadiums also exists already, including parking, transit access, security screening and broadcast facilities.
So the compromise gets made repeatedly, and the field is squeezed into the building rather than the building being altered around the field.
