Most sports balls are molded or bonded by machine. A cricket ball is still assembled by hand, because its seam is a working component rather than a joint that needs hiding.
The seam is the whole point
The raised stitching disturbs airflow around the ball, which is what allows conventional and reverse swing, and it gives the bowler something to grip and land on.
A flush, molded joint would produce a ball that flew straight and did nothing off the surface, which would remove a large part of the sport's mechanics.
So the seam has to stand proud, be consistent in height around the ball, and survive being struck and scraped for dozens of overs.
Construction under the leather
The core is cork, layered and wound with tightly wrapped string to build up mass and stiffness in controlled stages.
Winding tension determines hardness and how the ball retains shape. Loosely wound cores go soft early and lose their bounce well before the leather fails.
Four leather quarters are then cut, shaped and stitched around the core, with the two hemispheres joined by rows of hand-sewn stitching.
Why machines have not replaced the stitcher
The seam requires an even pull through curved, variable-thickness leather, adjusting tension continuously as the shape of the ball changes under the hand.
Machine-stitched balls exist and are used at lower levels, where the seam is lower and flattens quickly, which is acceptable in shorter matches.
At the top level the requirement is that the seam still stands up late in a long innings, and that has kept hand stitching in place.
Variation between makers is real
Different manufacturers use different leather treatments, lacquer thickness and seam heights, and the results behave measurably differently in the air and off the surface.
Some balls hold their hardness and shine longer; others soften and go out of shape sooner, which changes when a bowling side can expect help.
Competitions specify a supplier for exactly this reason, so that the equipment is at least consistent across a season even if it differs from another country's.
The ball is designed to degrade
Unlike most equipment, a cricket ball's aging is part of the contest. Shine wears off one side, the leather roughens, and the seam gradually flattens.
Every one of those changes is a designed consequence of natural materials rather than a defect, and the sport's tactics are built around the timeline.
Replacement rules exist for balls that go out of shape, and the replacement is deliberately matched in condition, which is itself a judgment made by hand.
