Most American arenas do not own one court so much as store one. The floor is assembled before a game and taken apart afterward, sometimes within the same night.
The building has other tenants
An arena that hosts basketball, hockey, concerts and family shows cannot dedicate its bowl to any single configuration. The seating, the floor and the rigging all have to change between events.
Revenue follows event count. Every night the building sits idle is fixed cost with no gate, so conversion time is a direct constraint on what the venue earns.
That pressure is why the court is a kit. A permanent floor would be cheaper and would play better, and almost no multi-purpose building can afford one.
How a court comes apart
Portable floors are built from panels, typically a few feet wide and long enough for two people to carry or a cart to take. Each locks to its neighbors along the edges.
Crews work outward from a fixed reference so the painted lines land in the same place every time. The panels are numbered, and they go down in a set order that never varies.
Removal reverses it. Panels stack onto rolling racks that live in a storage room off the event level, which is why floor storage is a design requirement rather than an afterthought.
What sits underneath in a hockey building
In arenas that also carry ice, the court is laid over an insulating deck placed on the frozen sheet. The ice stays in place all season because remaking it takes far longer than covering it.
That deck is the reason those floors run cold. Players and staff notice the difference in air temperature at ankle height, and condensation management becomes a nightly task.
Moisture that reaches the maple from below is the main failure mode. Crews check panel undersides for damp, because a wet subfloor warps quietly and shows up as a bounce problem later.
The crew is the real constraint
Conversion is labor, and the schedule is written around how many people the building can put on the floor at once and how quickly they can move racks through corridors.
Doorway width, ramp grade and elevator capacity all matter. A venue with a tight loading path can lose an hour to geometry that no amount of staffing recovers.
Buildings that book back-to-back events publish conversion times internally, and those times decide whether a promoter's date is even offered.
Why this shows up in the game
A floor reassembled hundreds of times develops wear at the locking hardware, and slightly loose joints change how the panels share load underfoot.
Line paint also ages unevenly because panels are stored in stacks that rub. Repainting happens panel by panel, which is why a court sometimes shows a slightly brighter three-point arc on one side.
None of this is visible on camera. It is the ordinary condition of a floor that spends most of its life in a storage room.
