A few stadiums solve the shaded-field problem by removing the field from the building. The grass sits on a movable tray parked outside and is driven in when it is needed.
What the tray actually is
The playing surface is grown on a rigid deck carrying its own rootzone, drainage and irrigation, effectively a shallow planter the size of a field.
That deck rides on rails, rollers or air casters set into the stadium floor and the apron outside, and it is moved by winches or motorized bogies.
Movement is slow and measured in hours, not minutes, because the mass involved is enormous and the tray must arrive precisely aligned.
Why anyone builds this
Grass needs sunlight and air movement, and a fully enclosed bowl provides neither. A field parked outside gets both without any artificial help.
It also frees the interior. With the tray withdrawn, the stadium floor becomes a hard surface suitable for concerts, conventions and other field configurations.
For a venue expected to host multiple sports plus non-sporting events, the tray converts a scheduling conflict into a logistics operation.
The costs are structural
The building has to carry the load path for a moving field, which means a floor designed as a machine surface rather than as a slab.
It also needs the land. A parked tray occupies a footprint the size of the field immediately outside the stadium, which is expensive real estate in a city.
Maintenance is continuous. Rails, drives, seals and alignment systems are mechanical assets requiring inspection whether or not the field moves that week.
Growing conditions still need managing
Sunlight outside is better than inside, not unlimited. Trays in northern climates still need supplemental lighting and heating during winter.
Wind exposure cuts both ways, drying the surface usefully but also stressing turf that is not sheltered by a bowl.
Irrigation and drainage have to work on a sealed deck with no natural subsoil, which makes water management tighter than on a conventional field.
Why it stayed rare
Hybrid reinforcement and grow lights arrived and solved most of the same problem for a fraction of the capital cost, without needing adjacent land.
Portable synthetic systems went further, letting a venue swap surfaces without engineering the floor to move.
The tray remains the most complete answer to the conflict between a sealed bowl and living grass, and also the one almost nobody can justify building.
