A shot clock is a piece of timing equipment bolted into the most hostile position in the building. It sits above the backboard, where the ball arrives at speed and the structure shakes.
The mounting location is the problem
Rules place the clock where players and officials can see it from the floor, which means directly above or behind the glass.
That location puts it in the path of long rebounds, deliberate bank attempts and warmup shooting. Impact is expected rather than exceptional.
It also puts the unit on a structure that flexes every time someone dunks. Vibration loosens fasteners and fatigues wiring over a season of games.
Displays and their enclosures
Modern units are LED matrices behind a protective face, and the face is a compromise between visibility and impact resistance.
A thicker guard survives more but reflects arena lighting back at cameras and at players. Venues tune this and often end up replacing faces rather than whole units.
Individual LEDs also fail, and a display with dead pixels in a digit is a competition problem, not a cosmetic one. Spares are held on site for that reason.
Wiring is the failure most people never see
Clocks are fed by both power and control signals, and the cable runs across a moving backboard assembly rather than a fixed wall.
Every conversion cycle in a portable-goal building flexes those runs. Connectors work loose, and an intermittent fault appears as a clock that freezes for a possession.
Wireless links removed some of that, and introduced interference as a new fault mode in a bowl full of radios and phones.
Synchronization with the game clock
The shot clock is not independent equipment. It has to start, stop and reset in step with the game clock and with the officials' controls.
That coordination lives in a console at the table, and its cabling and firmware are as much a part of the system as the display overhead.
When a reset behaves oddly, the cause is usually the console or the link rather than the panel players are looking at.
Why venues carry complete spares
A broken shot clock stops a game in a way a broken scoreboard does not, because play cannot legally continue without a visible count.
Swapping a unit means getting a lift onto the floor and working at height, which is why buildings prefer a quick-release mount over a bolted installation.
The economics are simple. The clock is cheap relative to the delay it causes, so venues hold redundant hardware and replace on suspicion rather than on failure.
