The overs right after the fielding restrictions lift decide more games

Sides plan meticulously for the first phase and then hand the next four overs to whoever happens to be bowling.

Overs seven to ten. Nobody has a name for them, no analyst builds a model around them, and I would argue they swing more limited overs matches than the phase everybody prepares for.

Here is what happens at that moment. Two extra fielders go out, the ball is thirty overs of hardness away from being soft, the batter who has just survived the opening burst is set and now facing a bowler who is usually the fifth option, and both captains switch mentally from a plan to a holding pattern. Batting sides call it consolidation. Fielding sides call it building pressure. In practice both are describing the same thing, which is that nobody has decided what to do, so the default takes over.

The default is a spinner from one end and a medium pacer from the other, singles available, a wicket every so often, and the game drifting. A batting side that attacks that window can be twenty ahead of the projection before anyone notices, because the field is spread but the ball is still coming on and the boundary rider is a long way from a gap that a genuine batter can find without swinging hard.

The fielding side has an equally big opportunity and takes it less often. This is the window where a captain should bowl his best bowler, not save him. The batter is set but the ball still does something, and the alternative is holding that bowler back for a death phase in which a good batter will simply hit him anyway. Saving overs for later is one of the most persistent bad habits in captaincy and it survives because it never looks like an error. Nobody says the match was lost in the ninth over.

I would also stop treating the phase as one block. The first ball after the restrictions lift is a specific psychological moment for a batter who has spent six overs watching a close in field, and a lot of them play a false shot in that over out of relief.

Plan for it explicitly. Name the overs, assign the bowler, tell the batters what the target is for the phase, and you have bought yourself an advantage against a side that will be improvising.
