The Ice Resurfacer Is A Water Temperature Problem

An ice resurfacer looks like a machine that cleans ice. What it actually does is remove a layer of damaged ice and replace it with a new one, using water that is deliberately hot.

What the machine does in one pass

A blade at the rear shaves a thin layer off the surface, and an auger system carries the snow up into a tank inside the machine.

Behind the blade, wash water is applied and vacuumed back to lift dirt out of the cuts left by skates.

Finally a towel spreads a measured flood of clean water across the shaved surface, which freezes into a fresh sheet within minutes.

Why the flood water is heated

Hot water contains less dissolved air, and it melts the top of the existing ice slightly as it lands, which fuses the new layer to the old.

The result is clearer, denser ice with fewer trapped bubbles, and clear ice is harder and faster than cloudy ice.

Cold flood water sits on top instead of bonding, freezing into a layer that chips off in sheets under the first hard stop.

Too much water is the common mistake

Every flood adds thickness, and thickness accumulates over a day of resurfacing. Thick ice insulates itself from the cooling slab and turns soft.

Operators therefore control volume tightly, and buildings track total ice depth over a season rather than assuming it stays constant.

When it gets too deep the answer is a deep shave, taking off accumulated ice without flooding, which is done between events rather than during them.

Blade condition decides the finish

The shaving blade is a long steel edge that dulls with use and picks up nicks from debris and from board contact.

A dull or damaged blade leaves ridges rather than a level cut, and no amount of flooding hides a surface that was not shaved flat.

Rinks keep multiple blades in rotation and send them out for sharpening, treating them the way a kitchen treats knives.

Timing within an event

Resurfacing needs time for the flood to freeze, which is why intermissions are long enough for the process rather than the process fitting the intermission.

Rushing produces a wet surface that skates cut through immediately, undoing the resurfacing within a few shifts.

Cutting the pattern also matters, since the machine must cover the whole sheet without driving over water it has just laid, which is why the route is fixed rather than improvised.

A blocked shot is an admission, not an achievement

I have never understood the applause.

A forward drops to one knee, takes a puck off the ankle, gets up limping, and the building roars. Fine, it is brave, and bravery deserves noise. But look at the ten seconds before it. The defending team lost the puck, failed to get it out on the first attempt, failed on the second, and ended up so far inside its own zone that the only remaining option was to put a human body in front of the net. The block is the last line of a chain of failures. We are cheering the final failure because it happens to be visible and painful.

The statistic makes it worse. Blocked shots are recorded as a defensive positive, and a defenceman with high block totals is described as a warrior. Sort any league's block leaders and you will find something uncomfortable: a lot of them play on teams that spend most of the night in their own end. That is not a coincidence. It is the definition.

The counter-argument is fair, so let me put it properly. Given that the puck is already there, the block is the correct action, and a player who takes it is doing his job. Yes. The block is a good decision inside a bad situation. My complaint is that we evaluate players on the decision and not the situation, and the two get quietly merged when a contract is being negotiated.

There is a cost, too, that never appears next to the number. Blocked shots break hands and feet. Not occasionally. Routinely. A team whose system relies on volume shot blocking is spending its own bodies to compensate for an inability to exit the zone, and it will pay for that in February when three defencemen are in walking boots.

The teams I admire block fewer shots and it means nothing sinister. They block fewer because the puck is not in front of their net as often, because their breakout works, because they win the wall battle at the blue line and the puck goes the other way.

Judge a defence by how rarely it needs a hero. The block is what you do when the system has already stopped working.
