A fixed stride pattern between barriers turns the sprint hurdles into a race about geometry rather than raw speed.

The hurdler who wins is rarely the fastest one

Three strides between hurdles. Not roughly three. Exactly three, every time, for nine gaps, at a distance that does not change to suit your legs.

That constraint is the event. A hurdler cannot simply run faster the way a flat sprinter can, because going faster means covering the same fixed distance in the same fixed number of steps, so the extra speed has to come from turnover rather than length. Push past what your pattern allows and you arrive at the barrier too close, which forces you upward instead of forward, and the time you gained on the ground is handed back in the air.

So the tall, powerful athlete who dominates a flat hundred can be actively disadvantaged. He arrives crowded. He has to decelerate into the take-off, which is the most expensive thing you can do in a race lasting thirteen seconds. Meanwhile a smaller athlete whose natural pattern fits the spacing carries a smooth rhythm and never brakes at all.

This is why the trail leg gets so much coaching attention and why I think it is slightly overdone. Trail leg mechanics matter, but most of the time a poor trail leg is a symptom. The athlete arrived wrong and the leg had nowhere to go. Fix the approach and the leg tidies itself up. Fix the leg and the athlete is still braking three metres out.

The other thing the pattern explains is why the event punishes fatigue so brutally at the end of a championship. Lose a fraction of turnover across rounds and your stride length has to grow to compensate, which puts you closer to each barrier, which forces a rise, which costs more speed. It compounds. A hurdler does not fade gently. He hits one, and then the race is over.

Watch the fifth and sixth barriers rather than the first. The start gets all the attention because it is visible, but almost every hurdles race is decided in the middle, where a small rhythm error meets a barrier that does not move.

The clock is measuring speed. The event is measuring fit.
