Rink Ice Sits On Brine Pipes Under A Concrete Slab

An ice sheet is roughly an inch of frozen water sitting on a large refrigeration machine. The pipes doing the cooling are buried in concrete below, and the ice is only the visible part.

The refrigeration loop

A plant chills a secondary fluid, usually a brine or glycol solution, and pumps it through pipes laid in a grid within the rink floor slab.

The primary refrigerant stays in the plant room and never enters the arena, exchanging heat with the secondary loop through a chiller.

Slab temperature is the control variable. Operators set it a few degrees below freezing and let the ice above find its own equilibrium.

Why the slab has to be flat

Ice thickness is set by how much water is applied over a slab, so any dip in the concrete becomes a thick patch and any high point becomes a thin one.

Thick ice is slower and softer because the extra depth insulates the surface from the cooling below.

Thin ice over a high point freezes harder and can be scraped through entirely by skates, exposing concrete and forcing a repair mid-season.

Building the sheet takes days

Ice is built in very thin layers, each sprayed and allowed to freeze before the next, because pouring depth at once produces a cloudy, weak sheet.

Early layers are painted white, then lines and logos are installed and sealed under further layers of clear ice.

The whole build takes days of continuous work, which is why arenas leave the sheet in place all season and cover it for other events.

The building fights the plant

Every source of heat in an arena lands on the ice, including lighting, spectators, outside air brought in for ventilation and the roof above.

Humidity is worse than heat. Moist air condenses on the cold sheet, adding frost and creating a slow, sticky surface, and it fogs the bowl in extreme cases.

Dehumidification equipment is therefore as important as the chiller, and buildings that skimp on it produce poor ice regardless of refrigeration capacity.

Ice temperature is a scheduling decision

Hockey wants colder, harder ice for speed and edge grip; figure skating prefers slightly softer ice that takes a landing without chipping.

Buildings hosting both adjust slab temperature between events, and the sheet takes hours to respond because of the thermal mass involved.

That lag is why an arena running back-to-back events of different types often gives one of them ice that is not quite right for it.

A blocked shot is an admission, not an achievement

I have never understood the applause.

A forward drops to one knee, takes a puck off the ankle, gets up limping, and the building roars. Fine, it is brave, and bravery deserves noise. But look at the ten seconds before it. The defending team lost the puck, failed to get it out on the first attempt, failed on the second, and ended up so far inside its own zone that the only remaining option was to put a human body in front of the net. The block is the last line of a chain of failures. We are cheering the final failure because it happens to be visible and painful.

The statistic makes it worse. Blocked shots are recorded as a defensive positive, and a defenceman with high block totals is described as a warrior. Sort any league's block leaders and you will find something uncomfortable: a lot of them play on teams that spend most of the night in their own end. That is not a coincidence. It is the definition.

The counter-argument is fair, so let me put it properly. Given that the puck is already there, the block is the correct action, and a player who takes it is doing his job. Yes. The block is a good decision inside a bad situation. My complaint is that we evaluate players on the decision and not the situation, and the two get quietly merged when a contract is being negotiated.

There is a cost, too, that never appears next to the number. Blocked shots break hands and feet. Not occasionally. Routinely. A team whose system relies on volume shot blocking is spending its own bodies to compensate for an inability to exit the zone, and it will pay for that in February when three defencemen are in walking boots.

The teams I admire block fewer shots and it means nothing sinister. They block fewer because the puck is not in front of their net as often, because their breakout works, because they win the wall battle at the blue line and the puck goes the other way.

Judge a defence by how rarely it needs a hero. The block is what you do when the system has already stopped working.
