Many American indoor meets are run on a track that did not exist in that building a week earlier. Banked tracks are portable structures, built and removed for the event.
Why banking is needed at all
An indoor track is short, which means tighter curves, and tighter curves demand more lateral force to keep a sprinting athlete on the line.
Banking tilts the surface so part of that force is supplied by the track itself rather than entirely by the athlete's foot friction.
Without it, athletes have to slow into the turns, and the shorter the track the more severe the penalty becomes.
The structure underneath
A portable banked track is a framework of steel or aluminum supporting a plywood or composite deck, with a synthetic surface bonded to the top.
Sections are prefabricated, trucked in and bolted together on the arena floor, with the banking built into the geometry of the supports.
Assembly takes days, which is why venues that host regular meets negotiate long holds on their calendar rather than building overnight.
Angle is a compromise
Steeper banking allows faster turns, but it also raises the outside edge, requiring more vertical space and more structure at the ends.
The transitions matter as much as the peak angle, since an athlete entering a bank too abruptly is thrown off stride.
So designers work backward from the arena's dimensions, choosing an angle the building can physically accommodate rather than an ideal one.
It changes how races are run
Lane positions carry different advantages than outdoors, and races that involve breaking from lanes produce more contact on a narrower track.
Distance races on a banked track require athletes to run repeated tight turns, which loads one side of the body far more than a flat outdoor lap.
Field events sit inside the oval on separate temporary runways, which have to be level and stable while surrounded by a sloping structure.
Flat tracks are the common alternative
Most college and community facilities run flat indoor tracks, permanently installed and considerably cheaper to own.
Times on flat tracks are systematically slower over the same distance, and results are commonly reported with the track type noted.
That distinction is a facilities fact rather than an athletic one, and it is the clearest example in the sport of a building deciding a performance.
