The ball used in a competitive basketball game is not the one that comes out of the carton. It is inflated to a checked pressure, measured, and handled until its surface behaves consistently.
Pressure is the variable everyone feels
Inflation pressure sets rebound height, and rebound height is what players read as a ball being lively or dead. The permitted range is narrow, and balls are gauged rather than squeezed.
Air pressure also drifts with temperature. A ball stored in a cold corridor and carried into a warm bowl reads differently on the gauge an hour later.
Crews therefore check close to tipoff rather than the day before, and they check each ball in the game set rather than sampling one from the bag.
Circumference and weight are both regulated
A game ball has to fall inside a size band and a weight band at the same time, and the two are checked with a tape and a scale, not by feel.
The tolerance exists because manufacturing varies. Panels stretch slightly during molding and curing, and a ball can pass on weight while drifting at the seam line.
Balls outside the band are pulled to practice use. Nothing is wrong with them for a workout, but a shooter's calibration is fine enough that a slightly large ball is noticeable.
The cover has to be broken in
Composite leather leaves the factory with a slick residue from the mold and finishing process. New out of the box, it is genuinely harder to grip.
Break-in is mechanical. Repeated handling and bouncing raises the pebbled texture and removes the surface film, which is why teams put new balls into practice rotation before a game set is chosen.
Some leagues have handled this by shipping balls pre-conditioned. The step still happens, it simply happens before delivery rather than in a gym.
Moisture is the other half of grip
Grip depends on the interaction between hand moisture and the cover. A dry ball in a dry building and a damp ball in a humid one behave differently in the same hands.
Ball crews wipe balls between whistles for exactly this reason. Sweat transferred from the floor and from players changes the surface within a few possessions.
Rotation solves the rest. Several balls circulate through a game so each has time to dry, rather than one ball absorbing everything.
Why balls come out of service early
Covers wear smooth in the areas that contact the floor most, and a ball with a polished band around it rolls and grips unevenly.
Bladders also lose air slowly through the valve. A ball that will not hold pressure between checks is retired regardless of how the cover looks.
The practical result is that a competitive program buys balls continuously rather than seasonally, and treats them as consumables with a countable service life.
