A goaltender's leg pads are not selected from a size chart in any meaningful sense. They are built from measurements of the player's leg and then checked against rules written in proportions.
Why measurement drives the build
A pad has to rotate cleanly when the goalie drops into a butterfly, and that rotation depends on where the knee lands relative to the pad's break.
If the knee stack sits too high or too low, the pad twists instead of sealing, and a gap opens along the ice exactly where shooters aim.
The relevant measurements are ankle to knee and knee to thigh, taken in a skating stance rather than standing, because the geometry changes with posture.
Rules are written as proportions
Equipment limits at higher levels are increasingly expressed relative to the goaltender's own body rather than as fixed maximums.
That approach exists because absolute limits favored smaller goalies, who could wear equipment that covered proportionally more of the net.
Chest protectors, pants and catchers are now specified the same way, with contour requirements intended to stop padding being used as flat coverage.
Construction has moved away from leather
Original pads were leather stuffed with animal hair and absorbed water, gaining weight through a game as they soaked up ice moisture.
Synthetic outer materials and closed-cell foam cores replaced that, giving equipment that stays at a constant weight and dries between sessions.
The stiffer modern core also rebounds pucks further, which changed rebound control from a matter of technique alone into a property of the equipment.
Strapping decides how the pad behaves
How tightly a pad is strapped controls whether it rotates with the leg or stays facing the shooter as the goalie goes down.
Looser strapping allows more rotation and a flatter seal on the ice; tighter strapping keeps the pad locked to the leg for pushing and recovery.
Goalies adjust this constantly through a season, and two players in identical pads can produce quite different coverage purely through strap setup.
Replacement is not on a normal schedule
Pads break down internally before they look worn, as foam compresses and the boot and knee areas soften from repeated contact with the ice.
A compressed pad loses rebound control and sits differently on the leg, which a goalie notices as timing problems rather than as equipment failure.
Because a rebuild takes weeks and a new pair takes longer, goalies typically break in a second set in practice long before the first set is retired.
