Some cricket is played on a strip that was grown somewhere else. The pitch is cultivated in a tray in a nursery area and lifted into the stadium before the match.
Why a venue needs one
A permanent cricket square occupies the center of a field year-round and cannot host other sports without being damaged.
Stadiums that also stage football codes, soccer or concerts cannot accept that, because the square would be destroyed by the first event over it.
A drop-in system removes the conflict. The playing strip exists only during the cricket season and the rest of the field is continuous turf.
How the tray is built
Pitches are grown in steel or concrete trays holding a full soil profile, deep enough that the strip behaves like ground rather than like a mat.
Depth is the key variable. Shallow trays produce pitches that feel hollow and lose bounce quickly; deeper trays weigh far more and need heavier lifting equipment.
The trays sit in a nursery for months where they are watered, rolled and prepared under the same regime a fixed square would receive.
Installation is a crane operation
Trays are lifted onto trucks, driven into the stadium and lowered into a prepared recess in the field, then leveled against the surrounding turf.
The join is the hard part. A lip between tray and outfield affects fielding, and a gap allows water to enter and undermine the edges.
Crews grow turf over the seam where they can, so the final surface reads as continuous even though a structural boundary sits underneath.
Do they play differently
Well-made drop-ins behave much like fixed pitches early, offering pace and carry because the profile is prepared to the same standard.
The differences appear later. Wear patterns and breakup can be less pronounced, because the tray is a controlled environment with no surrounding soil to draw moisture from.
Groundstaff can also compensate more precisely, since the strip is prepared away from match traffic and arrives in a known state.
The economics behind the choice
Trays, nursery space and lifting equipment are a substantial capital cost that only pays back if the venue books many non-cricket events.
Where a stadium hosts cricket exclusively, there is no reason to accept the expense and the seam risk, so fixed squares remain standard.
The system is therefore a facilities decision rather than a cricketing one, and it exists wherever a building has to earn its money from more than one sport.
