Venues announce large renovations and spectators remember small ones. Seat width, legroom and whether there is somewhere to put a drink account for most of how a seat actually feels.
The bowl geometry is fixed
Row spacing and the depth of each tread were set when the concrete was cast, and they cannot change without rebuilding the structure.
So a seating upgrade works inside a fixed tread depth, and every millimeter given to a cup holder or a thicker back comes out of legroom.
Width is similarly constrained by the row length and the number of seats a venue is unwilling to lose.
Wider seats mean fewer seats
Older stadiums were built with narrow seats by current expectations, and widening them reduces capacity directly.
Venues accept that trade when the remaining seats can be priced higher, which is why width increases usually appear in premium areas first.
In general admission areas the calculation goes the other way, and narrow seats persist because the revenue per row would otherwise fall.
Cup holders are an aisle problem too
A drink held in a hand is a spill risk and a reason to stand up, and a seatback holder removes both.
But a holder mounted on the seat in front reduces the clearance a spectator has to pass along the row, which affects how easily people can move.
Where treads are shallow, the holder has to be recessed or mounted on the armrest, both of which cost more than the simple version.
Materials decide the maintenance bill
Stadium seats live outdoors under sun, rain and freezing cycles, and plastics degrade under ultraviolet exposure regardless of how they are treated.
Fading and embrittlement show first on the sunniest side of a bowl, which is why one section can look years older than another.
Mounting hardware corrodes at the same time, and a seat that has to be removed to replace a bracket is a longer job than replacing the shell.
Why seats get replaced together
Replacing seats section by section leaves visible color mismatches, since the new plastic does not match the faded existing units.
Venues therefore replace whole bowls or whole tiers, which turns a maintenance item into a capital project with its own approval cycle.
The consequence is that seat replacement is deferred until it can be funded as a project, which is why worn seats persist in buildings that are otherwise well maintained.
