Lighting a tennis court is harder than lighting most sports spaces. The object is small, fast, and it travels high enough to cross the fixtures themselves.
Uniformity beats brightness
What players need is even illumination across the whole court, because the eye adapts to average brightness and loses detail in the darker patches.
A court lit to a high average with poor uniformity is worse than a dimmer court lit evenly, since the ball changes apparent brightness as it travels.
Specifications therefore set both an illumination level and a ratio between minimum and average, and the ratio is usually the harder requirement to satisfy.
Glare is the specific hazard
A server looks upward at the toss, and any fixture in that field of view puts a bright source directly into the eye at the moment of contact.
Designers keep fixtures out of the sight line by mounting them to the sides rather than the ends, and by aiming them across the court rather than along it.
Shielding and lens design control the rest, cutting off light emitted above a certain angle so the fixture is bright on the court and dim to the eye.
The vertical dimension is often forgotten
Most lighting calculations describe light falling on the ground, but a tennis ball spends its time in the air.
A ball at the top of a lob can pass above the fixtures into a darker zone, which is why indoor ceiling heights and outdoor pole heights are specified generously.
Backgrounds matter for the same reason. A dark, non-reflective surface behind the court keeps contrast high, which is why indoor halls are painted the way they are.
Indoor and outdoor differ substantially
Indoor courts get reflected light from ceilings and walls, which helps uniformity but risks bright patches directly in a player's view.
Outdoor courts have no reflecting surfaces at all, so all the light must come from the fixtures and spill control matters for neighbors as much as for players.
Wind and weather also load outdoor poles, which is why outdoor lighting is a structural design task before it is an optical one.
Why so many facilities relit
The shift to LED fixtures let venues replace lamps that took minutes to warm up with sources that switch instantly and dim on command.
Instant control matters for facilities that light courts on demand, and directional LED optics make uniformity easier to achieve with fewer poles.
The catch is that a badly aimed LED is a harsher glare source than the diffuse lamps it replaced, so aiming and shielding became more important, not less.
