A clay court is the only common tennis surface that is consumed by being played on. The top layer leaves the court on shoes, in wind and with rain, and has to be put back.
What the court is made of
Traditional European clay is built as layers over a drainage base, topped with a thin dressing of crushed brick that sits loose on a compacted binder layer.
American courts often use crushed stone systems that behave similarly, sitting on their own base with sub-surface irrigation feeding moisture upward.
In both cases the visible surface is a few millimeters deep. Everything below it is structure that players never touch.
Why the loose layer matters
Sliding is possible because the top dressing shears over the firm layer beneath. That shearing is also what decelerates the ball and produces the surface's characteristic bounce.
Too little dressing and the court becomes hard and fast, with no slide and a risk of catching a foot.
Too much and the surface feels loose and unpredictable, with the ball dying and footing shifting under load.
Daily maintenance is material management
Brushing after each session redistributes dressing from the areas where it accumulates back toward the areas that have been scraped bare.
Watering binds the dressing, controls dust and keeps the surface from drying into a slick crust. Under-watered clay is faster and considerably more slippery.
Lines are separate infrastructure, pinned or bonded into the base, and they have to be swept clean because a covered line is an officiating problem.
Seasonal rebuilding
At the end of a season the accumulated dressing is scraped off, the binder layer is repaired and re-rolled, and fresh material is spread and consolidated.
Where courts sit outdoors through freezing winters, the process also has to deal with frost damage to the base, which pushes the schedule into spring.
This annual work is why clay is uncommon at American public facilities. The surface is inexpensive to build and expensive to keep.
Weather is a daily variable
Clay drains well when properly built, which is why play can resume quickly after rain that would close a hard court for hours.
But heavy rain washes dressing off the court entirely, and repeated storms leave a surface that has to be topped up rather than merely brushed.
Heat works the other way, drying the surface faster than irrigation can keep up, which is why courts are watered between matches rather than once a day.
