A cricket bat is made from a single species of willow grown deliberately for the purpose. The tree that becomes a bat this year was planted before most of its users were born.
Why this particular timber
The willow used for bats is light for its stiffness and fibrous rather than brittle, so it compresses under impact and springs back instead of splitting.
Harder woods return more energy in theory and shatter in practice. Softer woods absorb impact and deaden the stroke.
The species is grown as a clonal crop, propagated from cuttings rather than seed, so growers can hold the timber's properties consistent across plantings.
Growing is a multi-decade commitment
Trees are planted in rows on wet lowland ground and take many years to reach usable diameter, with regular pruning to keep the trunk clear of knots.
Knots are the main defect. A branch scar inside the trunk becomes a weak point in the blade, and a single one can waste an entire cleft.
Because the cycle is so long, supply cannot respond to demand. A surge of interest in the sport cannot produce more mature timber for decades.
From trunk to cleft
Harvested trunks are cut into rounds and then split into wedge-shaped clefts, following the grain rather than sawing straight through it.
Clefts are then dried, first in open stacks and later under controlled conditions, until moisture content falls into a narrow band.
Drying too fast causes splitting, and drying too far leaves a blade that feels harsh and is more likely to crack in use. Both are unrecoverable.
Grading is largely cosmetic
Clefts are graded on the straightness and number of grain lines and on the absence of discoloration, and price follows that grading closely.
Performance correlates only loosely. Many bats with visible mineral staining or fewer grain lines play as well as the graded-high blades that cost several times more.
The grading persists because buyers can see it, which makes appearance a genuine part of the market even though it is a weak predictor of behavior.
Pressing sets the playing character
A shaped cleft is pressed under a roller, compressing the face into a hardened skin while leaving fibers below it able to flex.
Light pressing gives a bat that hits well immediately and has a shorter life. Heavy pressing gives a durable bat that needs extended knocking in first.
That single decision, made in a workshop before any player sees the bat, does more to determine how it plays than the grade printed on the sticker.
