A Cricket Square Is Built From Clay Not Grass

Spectators judge a cricket pitch by the grass on top. Groundstaff judge it by the clay underneath, because that is what decides bounce, pace and how the surface breaks up.

Clay content sets the bounce

Pitch soils are specified by their clay fraction. Higher clay content shrinks harder as it dries, binding into a dense surface that returns more energy to the ball.

Low-clay soils cannot be compacted to the same density. They stay softer, absorb impact and produce the low, slow bounce associated with tired surfaces.

This is why squares are built from imported soil selected for its properties rather than from whatever the ground happens to sit on.

The profile is built up in layers

A square is constructed as many thin layers, each spread, watered and consolidated before the next is added, so the finished block is continuous rather than laminated.

Layering failures cause delamination, where the top separates from the material below and the pitch lifts or crumbles under foot.

Rebuilding a square is therefore a multi-season project, done a strip at a time so the ground keeps a usable rotation of pitches.

Water is the control mechanism

Preparation is essentially controlled drying. Groundstaff soak the strip, then roll and dry it over days so moisture leaves evenly from the surface downward.

Dry too fast and the top cracks early. Dry too slowly and the pitch plays soft, gripping the ball and offering no carry to the keeper.

The timeline is fixed by the match date, which means the whole process is a forecast-dependent gamble made a week ahead.

Grass is a binder, not a surface

The grass cover on a prepared pitch is cut extremely short and exists mainly to hold the top millimeters of soil together against seam and spike damage.

Leaving more grass keeps moisture in and helps seam movement; shaving it exposes the clay and hands the advantage to bounce and later turn.

Either way the roots are the reinforcement. A pitch stripped completely of grass breaks up rapidly because nothing holds the surface layer.

Why squares are shared and rotated

A square holds several strips side by side, and grounds rotate through them so each has months to recover, be repaired and regrow.

Strips at the edges of a square are usually the weakest, having less surrounding material and more exposure to foot traffic from outfield play.

Where a venue plays too many matches for its square, the rotation shortens, repairs are incomplete, and the pitches gradually become slower every season.

A blocked shot is an admission, not an achievement

I have never understood the applause.

A forward drops to one knee, takes a puck off the ankle, gets up limping, and the building roars. Fine, it is brave, and bravery deserves noise. But look at the ten seconds before it. The defending team lost the puck, failed to get it out on the first attempt, failed on the second, and ended up so far inside its own zone that the only remaining option was to put a human body in front of the net. The block is the last line of a chain of failures. We are cheering the final failure because it happens to be visible and painful.

The statistic makes it worse. Blocked shots are recorded as a defensive positive, and a defenceman with high block totals is described as a warrior. Sort any league's block leaders and you will find something uncomfortable: a lot of them play on teams that spend most of the night in their own end. That is not a coincidence. It is the definition.

The counter-argument is fair, so let me put it properly. Given that the puck is already there, the block is the correct action, and a player who takes it is doing his job. Yes. The block is a good decision inside a bad situation. My complaint is that we evaluate players on the decision and not the situation, and the two get quietly merged when a contract is being negotiated.

There is a cost, too, that never appears next to the number. Blocked shots break hands and feet. Not occasionally. Routinely. A team whose system relies on volume shot blocking is spending its own bodies to compensate for an inability to exit the zone, and it will pay for that in February when three defencemen are in walking boots.

The teams I admire block fewer shots and it means nothing sinister. They block fewer because the puck is not in front of their net as often, because their breakout works, because they win the wall battle at the blue line and the puck goes the other way.

Judge a defence by how rarely it needs a hero. The block is what you do when the system has already stopped working.
